God rocks!

Though the roof leaks, yet will I praise Him. And when it gets fixed but leaks again, yet will I praise Him. When my wife can barely walk because of her mysteriously swollen ankle, yet will I praise Him. Though something in the suspension breaks on my car & drags upon the ground as I'm driving to go lead worship, yet will I praise Him. When I get stressed to the point of breaking, yet will I praise Him. Though the windows & the balcony door in my apartment don't seal so that the wind & rain blow in, yet will I praise Him.

There are still happy friends to be seen on the internet. There are still creative outlets available. There is still warmth & prosperity in life.

All in all, Jesus is worth every breath I have to be devoted to His glory.

Kid Worship Leader

Filips is, in fact, the cutest kid on the face of the planet. His chubby cheeks, even at 3, are still amazingly adorable. If he smiles, you better don the shades. If he laughs, your obligatory laugh will follow close behind. If he cries, you'll wonder why all kids can't cry so softly & sweetly.

Tonight, during a worship service, as the worship leader jammed tunes to Jesus, I watched as Henrijs, a staffer, held tightly while Filips played pivot-swing. Henrijs had a hold of Filips' hands, & Filips would stand in one spot & just swing side-to-side in total abandonment. He kept doing it until he laughed... & then did it some more. He had no fear that Henrijs would let go.

It was a perfect picture of how I think worship should be... totally abandoned to our Maker with no fear that He'll let us go.

My wife came across this from a couple years back. My cat, Simon, who sadly is in the US now, decided to climb into the sleeve of my coat. I had just taken it off not too long before that. Gives a new meaning to loafing around.

Latvia and the Johns & Cats that Love Them

I led worship in Latvian recently. Thankfully, I had my semi-co-worker-missionary Seattlite friend, Marnie (member of Xenos) to help me with the tough songs.

Wait! Did you say Latvian songs?

Yes, kids, that's right. I indeed sang in Latvian.

But, I didn't think you could speak Latvian...

Well, I can't too well yet, but the years I spent in Czech were a great preparation for being able to at least pronounce Latvian, since the two languages (along with several others) use almost the same alphabet. It was a lot of fun! I'm on again next Wednesday.

I've been frantically working on an ad to place in the Go! Manual, a yearly publication of YWAM ministry & schooling opportunities around the world. Somehow we came up with a guy named Janis (YAH-niss), a Jani (YAH-nyee) crown on his head, wearing a black tux, shades sitting in a red baby bath as a sleigh holding reins attached to a fluffy black cat. Sounds funny? Good! That's the point! Wanna picture? Sorry.... you'll have to wait until January when the next Go! Manual comes out to see it!

But I can give you pictures of our excursion to Ventspils, the richest city in Latvia.
